Golfer Joe raises funds FORE lymphoma services

Dec 18, 2019

Keen golfer Joe Regan was able to combine his passion for the sport with his desire to thank the clinical team that helped him through his two and a half year battle with lymphoma.

Joe was diagnosed with lymphoma, a cancer that begins in infection-fighting cells of the immune system, following a bout of ill health in 2017. For someone who was very rarely sick, the diagnosis was a complete shock to Joe, his wife Joan and their family.

Coming under the care of Dr Charalampia Kyriakou at Northwick Park Hospital, Joe underwent chemotherapy and a three week stay in hospital as he fought the disease. While the treatment was gruelling, Joe was quick to praise the skill and dedication of Dr Kyriakou’s team who always went the extra mile to make him as comfortable as they could, no matter how busy they were.

As Joe’s health improved, his thoughts turned to thanking the medical team that had saved his life and how, after an enforced 12 month absence from a golf course, he could call upon his golfing friends to put on a special fundraising day.

"The medical team were amazing throughout my treatment. Everyone at the hospital has been so good and caring to me and my family over the last two years, and this fundraising is a small token of our appreciation for such a wonderful group of people and the amazing work they do".

Members of Cairde Maigheo, Conways and GAA golf societies joined Joe at Mill Hill Golf Course on (07/06/19) for a day of golf that even the shocking weather couldn’t spoil. With an auction and other fundraising activities taking place, Joe was able to raise the incredible sum of £8,000 for Dr Kyriakou’s Lymphoma Fund.

"The golf societies I belong to are very generous and always raising money for charity. They were all really keen to help me thank Dr Kyriakou; I knew I could count on them”

Simon Pitts, Community Manager at LNWH Charity, said: “On behalf of Dr Kyriakou and her team, we would like to thank Joe and all his golfing friends who gave so generously. To raise all this money while he was fighting his illness is truly amazing.”
