IBD Cerner project success

Apr 15, 2024

Thanks to funding from LNWH Charity, through the transformation innovation fund, Cerner (electronic patient record programme) rollout across the inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) service was a breeze.
Following a successful funding application by Professor Arebi, clinical lead, Tracey Tyrrell, advanced nurse practitioner and Lydia Flannery, IBD clinical nurse specialist, stepped up to make sure that the Cerner system worked with them, and not against them.
They said: “We worked with a core team, including dedicated floor walkers, to build on the help and support that the Trust were offering. We used our weekly “Gut Club” meetings where colleagues had the opportunity to raise any concerns or share updates and good practice. We also shared training slides and were available to answer any questions.
“We felt it helped everyone to cope better with this huge change and gave us the opportunity to streamline our systems and harmonise our service. We all do things differently, so we tried to ensure we showed colleagues how to use Cerner more efficiently and effectively before bad habits formed, so they didn’t feel overwhelmed. We were all feeling the same anxiety, so it was good to share those feelings, reassure each other and boost morale.
“The floor walkers were so supportive. They made screen recording videos and quick reference guides for training purposes which really helped the team, and we hope to make the training material available online at the end of the project.
“The transformation innovation funding allowed us to dedicate our time and resources to support colleagues outside of our working day. Without the funding, it simply wouldn’t have been possible.
“We’ve had really positive feedback from colleagues who recognise how we went the extra mile to ensure Cerner was implemented smoothly in the IBD service.”
Four people smiling with their thumbs up.
