Women and children

Your donations provided colourful and calming visuals for young patients

Young children from babies upwards can now enjoy a colourful and welcoming environment, at the children’s unit, Ealing Hospital, thanks to significant LNWH Charity funding.

The new modular build at Ealing Hospital was completed in December 2020, but the refurbishments were finished in the summer months of 2022. The children’s unit consists of a paediatric day care unit and paediatric outpatients’ clinic and caters for babies and children up to the age of 16. Additionally, children up to the age of 18 with special needs such as autism, double development delay or those in care are also accommodated.

The children’s unit operates from 9am till 5pm, Monday to Friday and the busiest days are Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. The space has consulting rooms, a breastfeeding area and two waiting sections.

Just like the children’s unit on the Northwick Park Hospital site, people upon arrival in this area, are greeted by glamour wall designs, consisting mainly of rainbow themes. This children’s unit had play equipment ordered in January 2021 and there’s a mobile playstation available to older children having tranfusions in a ward, for a couple of hours or all day.

As well as a mobile playstation, the children’s unit has wall games with units that have different colours and interactive games and a sliding interactive puzzle. Essentially there is something for children of different ages and abilities, to make the hospital visit as pleasant as possible.

In October 2021, the charity organised its first ever virtual half marathon, where all the funds raised earmarked for an Elderly Care Wards Dayroom conversion into reminiscent dwellings from the 1940’s, 50’s and 60’s eras. With a current fundraising total of more than £3,100, the Older People and Dementia Services team will be able to provide equipment for their activity programme, which will give patients the opportunity to have a much better experience in the hospital environment.

“All these features would not have been possible without the funding received from our hospital charity.”

Your donations added colour to children’s ward

Our new paediatric unit, Rainbow Ward, is bursting with colour thanks to funding from LNWH charity and LNWH NHS Trust.

The Rainbow Ward is a new modular build and opened in September 2021. It has a Day Care paediatric section within the unit, eight paediatric assessment rooms and a POSCU Suite (Paediatric Oncology Shared Care Unit).

When it came to the design of the ward, the main purpose was to make it child friendly, comforting and reassuring for patients and families.

LNWH charity funded the design, decoration and installation of colourful wall illustrations and each room within the ward has a different theme.

Kay Larkin, Divisional Head of Nursing, Children’s Services at LNWH NHS Trust, said:

“The wall art is very good for distracting children when they come in for a procedure or short stay and it’s important that we make children feel as comfortable as possible in a hospital environment.

“I would like to thank LNWH charity for their contribution to Rainbow Ward.”

Wilhelmina Johnson, Ward Manager, Paediatric Day Care Unit, said:

“Rainbow Ward is very child-friendly and engaging and the children really like the surroundings.”

Rainbow Ward accommodates children and young people aged from birth up until their 16th birthday who require elective day care procedures, investigations, diagnostic testing and children with cancer.
