Kerry takes on the London Marathon for LNWH Charity
Feb 07, 2024
Kerry Wloskowicz, a clinical nurse specialist in palliative (end-of-life) care is about to take on her third London marathon, to support LNWH Trust Butterfly Project.
The project is close to Kerry’s heart, as she helped set it up almost two years ago.
“We currently have 18 amazing butterfly volunteers, who offer companionship and comfort to dying patients and their loved ones. Some patients don’t have any family or friends to be with them, so their care and compassion is so important. They also give family members a break, so they can get something to eat or go home for a shower.
“The volunteers reached their 500th patient visit recently which shows just how much support they can give at such a vulnerable time in someone’s life.
“I have worked in palliative care at LNWH Trust for nine years and am passionate about making sure everyone has the best end-of-life care possible.
“After a hectic roller-coaster year, I applied for a ballot place to give me something to focus on, thinking I wouldn’t get a place, but I did! This marathon is for self-achievement, and I won’t be aiming for the fastest time – Just making it over the finish line will be enough for me.
“I started my training programme in December, and am getting the miles in, so not long to go until I lace up my trainers in April and take to the starting line with thousands of others.
“The Butterfly volunteers are such an essential team, so any money I raise will go towards recruiting more volunteers and ensuring that they continue to be there for patients and families when they are needed the most.”
