Pharmacy on wheels are ready to roll
July 15, 2024
Thanks to funding from LNWH Charity, through the transformation innovation fund, mobile dispensing units are ready to roll.
Malcolm Smith, principal medicines management pharmacy technician and Aarti Patel, pharmacy lead for transformation tell us more.
“The project sees pharmacy technicians on wards dispensing medicine and talking to patients, which means they can go home from hospital more quickly.
“Currently it can take up to two hours for discharge medication to be supplied from the pharmacy, and patients must wait for this medication to arrive on the ward before they can go home. Pharmacy on wheels will speed this process up with the added bonus of being able to clearly explain to patients how and when they should take their medication. They can also answer any questions patients might have.
“The mobile dispensing units have been delivered, and now have a laptop and pharmacy labelling machine attached to them, as well as secure storage for medication.
“We have identified areas on each of our three hospitals sites to pilot the project, and our technicians are really enjoying getting out and about to speak to patients about their medication.”
