Sabina’s 3 Peaks Challenge for surviving breast cancer appeal

October 08, 2024

Sabina Rashid, consultant in breast and reconstructive surgery at Northwick Park Hospital is ditching her much loved heels for hiking boots, to take on the Yorkshire 3 Peaks Challenge on 12 October. And she’s hoping her faithful four-legged companion, Ginger, will keep her company, on a least some of the hike.

Sabina said: “This is the first time I’ve taken on anything like this, and it will certainly be a challenge. I walk my dogs twice a day, covering 5 – 7 kilometres, so I’m somewhat fit.

“The challenge covers the same distance as a marathon, 26 miles, and we’re aiming to complete it in 12 hours. We’ll be hiking up and down the peaks of Pen-y-Ghent, Ingleborough and Whernside, and involves 5000ft (1600 metres) of vertical ascent.

“Anyone who knows me, knows how much I love my heels. I’ve even done a whole A&E shift in them, so swapping them for walking boots will be interesting.

“The event is being organised by Motiva, a global, breast implant and medical technology company, and breast consultants and surgeons across the UK will be taking part, to raise money for their own charities.

“I will be raising money for our own LNWH NHS Trust surviving breast cancer appeal to help us buy a tattoo machine and ink. One of the harrowing side effects of breast cancer treatment can be the loss of hair, including eyebrows and eyelashes. To help patients with their recovery, we want to introduce a tattooing service where a member of staff will be specially trained to tattoo eyebrows for any breast cancer survivors who wishes to have them.

“For patients who have had reconstructive surgery but not the replacement of the areola (the circular darker-coloured area of skin surrounding the nipple) and the nipple, the tattooist can do this as well.”
