Improving surgery for breast cancer patients
February 03, 2025
You may remember that last year we pledged £1M to fund equipment, medical research, innovations, advanced technology, and facilities at LNWH NHS Trust, thanks to your kind donations.
One of the projects, voted for by staff, was a breast cancer verification system to allow surgical teams to identify the border of normal tissue surrounding a cancerous tumour, without samples having to be sent out of theatre.
We’re delighted that the scanning system has now been installed and is making a huge difference to our patients.
Previously, when cancerous tumours were removed, they were sent out of theatre to be checked by radiologists, to ensure the complete tumour had been removed. If the edges of the tumour were not clear, more tissue would need to be removed. This radiology checking process could take up to 30 minutes.
With the new scanning system now in the theatre, the surgeon can check the tumour immediately, and take the necessary steps. This means that patients are under aesthetic and in surgery for a much shorter time.
