Training helps rehab patients focus on the positives
May 27, 2025
Kruti Jani is a speech and language therapy assistant and works with inpatients and outpatients at Northwick Park Hospital. She tells us how our funding is helping patients with their recovery.
“Many of the patients I support are facing a life-changing diagnoses or recovering from serious medical events, which can significantly impact their emotional and psychological well-being.
“The training I attended - solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT) - provided me with a structured approach to help patients focus on their strengths, identify meaningful goals, and build confidence in their ability to cope with their condition.
“Many of my patients, particularly those with head and neck cancer or who have had a stroke, experience a profound loss of function, which could be their ability to speak, swallow, or communicate effectively. These losses can lead to frustration, anxiety, or feelings of hopelessness.
“The SFBT course gave me the tools to shift conversations from a problem-focused mindset to a strengths-based approach. By learning how to ask targeted questions about what has worked well in the past and what small steps could be taken to move forward, I can help patients regain a sense of control over their rehabilitation journey.
“Rather than focusing on problems that may feel overwhelming to patients, I can guide discussions towards practical, achievable goals that build confidence and motivation. This improves patient engagement and improves therapy outcomes by fostering a more positive and proactive approach to rehabilitation.
“Thank you to LNWH Charity for giving me the opportunity to attend this course. I can share the learning with my colleagues, so all our patients will benefit.”
