A pilot for stroke patients is underway
July 28, 2025
Thanks to our funding through the transformation and innovation fund, patients with swallowing difficulties are receiving electrical stimulation to help them recover more quickly.
Speech and language therapists, Waiza Kadri and Samantha Babooa are leading this fantastic project, and tell us more.
“We’re delighted to have received funding for this initiative, which will make a big difference to our patients.
“Phagenyx is a medical device and treatment method used to address swallowing difficulties, specifically neurogenic dysphagia (swallowing problems caused by neurological damage after a stroke or brain injury, for example).
“A nasal tube (catheter) is inserted through the nose and into the throat and delivers small electrical currents which helps the brain reorganize its swallowing control.
“We purchased three catheters, and three were provided by the company, and we are in the process of applying for funding for three more. Each catheter can only be used once for one patient, so we’re identifying patients with severe swallowing difficulties who will benefit the most on Haldane and Herrick wards at Northwick Park Hospital.
“We have already treated one patient, and saw some improvement, but the process needs some fine tuning to ensure patients receive the maximum dosage of electrical stimulation. We are working with our colleagues to overcome these challenges.
“The ultimate aim of this project is to help our patients to recover more quickly so they can start eating and drinking safely.”
