Patient activities a hit on Evelyn Ward
Oct 20, 2025
Patients in our trauma orthopaedic ward at Northwick Park Hospital often experience long recovery times, which can lead to feelings of depression and boredom.
To address this, Juliana Okolonta, activity coordinator, applied for Charity funding to introduce an activity programme to engage patients, reduce anxiety, and create a more homely environment, especially for those with dementia who find hospital settings unfamiliar. And of course we were delighted to help.
Juliana says: “The activities offered include colouring books, playing scrabble, cards, or chess, and using digital options such as listening to music, watching videos, and playing crosswords on a screen. Family members are also encouraged to participate to enhance engagement.
“Patients can play alone or with staff, and group activities such as bingo are being planned to help patients interact.
“Since introducing the activities, we’ve noticed a positive impact on patients’ mental and emotional well-being and with managing anxiety and stress during their hospital stay.
“We’ve also seen a reduction in falls, as patients are being kept mentally and physically engaged at their bedsides.
“Thanks to LNWH Charity for funding this programme, which is making a real difference to patients wellbeing and ultimately their recovery.”
