Yoga makes a difference to women with bladder problems

Nov 10, 2025

Thanks to our funding, patients with urinary incontinence are seeing improvements following a Yoga pilot project at LNWH NHS Trust.

Staff nurse, Bharti Tailor, tells us more.

“One in three women over the age of 50 will experience incontinence at some point in their lives resulting in anxiety, depression, social isolation and embarrassment.

“Research has shown that yoga designed to strengthen pelvic floor muscles improved symptoms as much as 65%, as well as the physical and mental wellbeing of the women who took part.

“We held a twelve-week one hour Hatha yoga programme with twenty-minute home exercises, three times a week, specially designed to strengthen pelvic floor muscles by the yoga instructor.

“All the women who took part saw significant improvements. They kept bladder diaries and brought them to the weekly classes, so we could address any issues as they arose.

“Thanks to LNWH Charity for funding this pilot project. Due to its success, we hope you hold further classes next year.”
