Cool relief for dialysis patients
June 01, 2026
When the ice machine in the renal unit at Northwick Park Hospital became irreparable, we stepped in to help purchase a much-needed replacement.
Claire Edwards, head nurse and matron at the renal centre, explains the challenges faced by patients undergoing dialysis.
“Due to their kidneys no longer being able to remove excess fluid, these patients must limit their fluid intake, often to just one small bottle of water (about 500 to 750ml) each day. If they exceed these limits, fluid can accumulate dangerously in their bodies between dialysis treatments, leading to fluid overload and potentially serious complications.
“Ice is a simple but effective way to help manage the persistent thirst experienced by dialysis patients. With the new ice machine, we can now offer patients ice cubes and small iced juice drinks during their treatment sessions, providing welcome relief and comfort.
“This will make a huge difference to patients receiving care in the renal unit, so thanks so much to LNWH Charity for their funding.”
