Butterfly probe speeds up diagnosis

July 21, 2025

Our funding is helping to diagnose and treat patients with respiratory conditions sooner.

Ramnik Sandhu, service manager for respiratory medicine and infectious diseases tells us more.

“A butterfly probe is a handheld ultrasound device that's required to support respiratory procedures performed in a safe and effective way. We also have a mobile device on wheels, which is very effective, but difficult to move around the hospital.

“This new device means we can easily and quickly carry it anywhere we need to in the hospital.

“Many of our inpatients are very unwell, so our team need to see them on wards. We can diagnose them for conditions such as fluid on the lung or trapped air in the lungs and start treating them immediately. This means they can go home sooner, and don’t need to come back for an outpatient appointment.

“Our team is growing so we need to ensure we have enough equipment and are using the latest technology to treat our patients as quickly as we can.

“Without LNWH Charity funding, through the transformation and innovation fund, we simply would not have been able to purchase the butterfly probe. I’d definitely recommend that colleagues consider applying for funding if they have a great project that they need help with.”
