Medication wristbands support patients taking time-critical medicines in A&E
Mar 02, 2026
Some patients arriving at London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust Emergency Department (ED) rely on medicines that must be taken at very specific times. In a fast-paced and high-pressure environment, these doses can sometimes be delayed, which can have serious consequences for patients.
With LNWH Charity funding support, the Northwick Park Hospital ED has introduced purple medication wristbands labelled “I am taking time critical medicines, please give on time.” These wristbands help staff quickly identify patients who require urgent, scheduled medicines and ensure they are given on time.
A&E pharmacist Chandni Shantilal said: “For patients with conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, or diabetes requiring insulin, receiving medication on time is essential. Delays can lead to complications and may prolong their stay in hospital.
“The purple wristbands make it easier for staff to recognise these patients and prioritise their medicines, improving safety and patient experience.
“We’re extremely grateful to LNWH Charity for funding this initiative, which will make a real difference to patient care.”
