Elderly care

Supporting dementia

Supporting individuals living with dementia presents one of the biggest challenges for our health care system. Our charity has a strong commitment to improving dementia care in North West London.

There are currently around 850,000 people living with the condition in the UK. One in 14 people over 65 will have dementia and the condition affects 1 in 6 people over 80.

The number of people with dementia is going up and this is, mainly because people are living longer, which means more people with dementia are receiving care in hospitals for different medical conditions including trauma, strokes and cardiovascular disease.

The central focus for dementia always tends to be how the care is delivered, but the environment and surroundings within which that care is given also needs to be given consideration.

There is strong evidence to suggest, that the right environment has a benefit not only to patients and their families, but also the staff providing the care.

In October 2021, the charity organised its first ever virtual half marathon, where all the funds raised earmarked for an Elderly Care Wards Dayroom conversion into reminiscent dwellings from the 1940’s, 50’s and 60’s eras. With a current fundraising total of more than £3,100, the Older People and Dementia Services team will be able to provide equipment for their activity programme, which will give patients the opportunity to have a much better experience in the hospital environment.

Alexandra Lukjaniec, Matron for Older People and Dementia Services says: “We really appreciate all the hard work and efforts by LNWH charity and the virtual half marathon participants, to make this funding available for our service. Making our patients feel more happy and comfortable during their hospital stay is a top priority for us and this donation will definitely help us to achieve our goal.”
